Why I'm Running

As I have been out and about talking to people about running for school board, I am frequently asked the question, “What prompted you to run?”

The answer really comes down to the truism that learning begets learning.

Despite having a strong background in education and being a part of the Encinitas Union School District for 12 years in a variety of capacities, I really didn’t know much about the district itself.  It wasn’t until I was working on coursework for my Master’s in Educational Administration that I learned about how the district works and its priorities.  You don’t always know what you don’t know.

I don’t think the community should have to get an advanced degree to understand their local school district.  I would like to serve on the board to help assist other parents in advocating for improved education by monitoring and evaluating school and district progress, helping community members understand, “what it all means,” and encouraging active participation at the school and district levels.

I believe that the role of a board member is not to push a specific agenda, but to be responsive to the community in which it serves. I know that the schools in Encinitas Union School District are fine.  But I want more than “fine” for our children.  The schools can and should be great.   In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins says, “Good is the enemy of great. And that is one of the key reasons why we have so little that becomes great. We don't have great schools, principally because we have good schools.”

It is time to truly reflect on the district and evaluate its programs on an ongoing basis to ensure that we identify strengths and weaknesses to inform program decisions and make timely improvements.  With knowledge comes empowerment.  Let’s empower our community by increasing communication about what is going on and soliciting their input and knowledge.   The schools are the heart of our community.  The students are our children and neighbors, and they deserve to have great schools that are reflective of our amazing communities.
